As a novice to the wonderful world of 4wd, you'll fall into one of two groups - those that think that they know it all already, and those who are entirely terrified and have no idea how you can deal with 'their' 4x4 safely, not to mention get the greatest performance from it!

Pace & Velocity

If you hit a place of trouble Don't accelerate - it can easily get you into an even more serious situation. Slow down and go slower - this helps you to keep traction and the tires will work for you rather than turning uselessly. When you approach an obstacle, you will need momentum. The trick is to start out a little way back to achieve the speed you require. This is a skill which you'll master with time.

Boundaries

Do not try difficult obstacles when you're out alone. Push your limits when you're with more encountered wheelers. If you choose to go out alone, make sure your vehicle is very well outfitted, including owning a winch with a nice winch rope that won't fail.

Mud

Use a long stick to test a new mud hole for depth and softness. Keep in mind a particularly swampy mud pit can prove to be impossible to escape! Drive into the mud hole with a little speed and in the event you feel that you are getting stuck turn the tires left to right to acquire a better grip. Once you have gone as far forward as you can try to use reverse to get out.

Windows

Keep the passenger windows rolled up to avoid a mud bath or a face full of dust.

Stuck

When you are truly stuck, try letting a bit of the air out of the tires for better footing and when you get out of the ditch, make sure you remember to air them back up.

Stalling

If you stall with your tailpipe beneath the water, get towed out and take out the spark plugs, turn over the engine, and reinstall the spark plugs, before trying to start the engine again. A cylinder full of fluid might destroy the engine.

Obstacles

Move slowly over obstacles. If necessary, pull the hand brake a bit for pressure on the drive shaft to slow the automobile and enable you to accelerate smoothly over the obstacle. If your ride comes with 4low, employ it. Also, be prepared to take a winch cable if the obstacle is extremely difficult to overcome.

Steering

Be sure you grip the steering wheel with thumbs out whenever you're off-road. If you hit a huge bump or obstacle the wheel can rotate too rapidly and hurt your fingers. Keeping them out helps to prevent an injury. Keep your hands and arms in the vehicle in order to avoid mishaps.

Keep the following with you:
A farm jack
Steel line
Spare tires and plug kit

Safety

Wear a seat belt
Don't travel by yourself
Have a mobile on you
Don't consume alcohol when driving
Get back on the highway before dark
Give fellow 4 wheel drive owners on the path plenty of room
Make sure to handle winch ropes carefully so that you don't get metal slivers or get a cable malfunction
